The Fisher and Paykel Eson is a compact nasal CPAP mask built around three parts designed to work together: the RollFit seal, the Easy Frame and ErgoFit headgear. It covers the nose only, leaving the mouth uncovered, and is supplied complete with headgear in small, medium or large.

The RollFit seal is the reason people choose this mask. It is a one-piece cushion that rolls back and forth on the bridge of the nose as the wearer moves, adjusting the seal automatically rather than needing to be repositioned. The nasal bridge is the hardest part of the face to seal and the place where a nasal mask most often leaves a mark, and a seal that moves with the face rather than pressing harder against it is what addresses both. Integrated stability panels keep the cushion in place through the night.

The ErgoFit headgear is designed to sit high on the back of the head, which is what allows an active sleeper to move without the mask being dragged out of position. Important notice

Choosing the right size. The Eson comes in small, medium and large, and the size governs the seal, not only the comfort. A seal that is too small presses into the sides of the nose and leaks at the bridge, while one that is too large leaks into the eyes. Size against the manufacturer's sizing guide, or with the sleep service, rather than by estimate, and expect to try a second size if the first leaks despite correct fitting. Tightening the headgear to stop a leak usually makes it worse by distorting the seal, so a persistent leak is a sizing question before it is a strap question.

Vent and safe use. This is a vented mask for use with CPAP and bi-level devices. Exhaled air leaves through the diffuser, and the diffuser and its filter must never be blocked, covered or removed while the mask is in use, since that is how carbon dioxide is cleared. Use the mask only with a device running, and with the diffuser filter fitted. Anyone who breathes through the mouth at night, or who cannot remove the mask unaided, should discuss mask choice with their sleep service before using a nasal mask.

Cleaning and renewal. Wash the seal, frame and elbow in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse and air dry away from direct sunlight, and wash the headgear by hand. Do not use bleach, alcohol or scented products, which degrade silicone and leave residue in the air path. The diffuser filter on this mask is a consumable and is renewed from the 10 pack rather than washed. Renew the seal when it hardens, discolours or no longer seals despite correct fitting, and the headgear when it loses its elasticity.
