Transcend AirFlex Lightweight CPAP Hose, 1.2 m, New

The AirFlex is Somnetics' lightweight CPAP hose for the Transcend range, and this is the short one at 1.2 m. It carries standard 22 mm cuffs at both ends, so it connects to any CPAP device and any mask built to the 22 mm fitting rather than only to a Transcend machine.

Length is the whole decision here. A standard hose is 1.8 m, which is right when the machine sits on a bedside table across from the pillow. At 1.2 m there is a third less hose in the bed, and that changes three things. There is less weight hanging off the mask, so the seal is pulled less when the sleeper turns. There is less loose hose to coil around an arm or drop off the mattress and pull the mask sideways. And there is less tube surface for warm humid air to condense on, so rainout has less opportunity to collect.

It suits a machine that sits close: on a shelf behind the headboard, on a bedside cabinet within arm's reach, or clipped to a hose management arm above the pillow. It also suits travel, where 600 mm of hose saved is real space in a case and the machine is usually on whatever surface is nearest the bed. What it does not suit is a machine on the floor or on a table across the room, where 1.2 m simply will not reach and will tug at the mask all night trying.

The construction is flexible rather than ribbed and rigid, which is where the lightweight name comes from and why it tracks movement instead of resisting it. Somnetics also make the AirFlex in a 1.8 m length under catalogue number 503120 for anyone who finds the short hose too short. This hose is supplied new, and weekly cleaning is the maker's guidance.

Points to note before ordering

Measure the run first. At 1.2 m this hose reaches a machine beside the pillow, not one on the floor or across the room. Where the run is longer, the 1.8 m AirFlex, catalogue number 503120, is the one to order.
Standard 22 mm connection only. This hose fits devices and masks built to the 22 mm cuff. The Transcend Micro takes its own dedicated tubing and is not served by a standard 22 mm hose, so a Micro owner is to order the tubing specified for that device.
Unheated hose. There is no heater wire and no device connection for one. Where a heated tube is prescribed or already in use, this hose is not a substitute for it.
Cleaning. Somnetics advise weekly cleaning. Disconnect from the device and the mask, wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse thoroughly and hang to air dry fully before refitting. No harsh chemicals or solvents.
Single patient use. A CPAP hose is a single patient item and is not to be shared or passed on. It is taken out of service when the cuffs slacken, the wall splits or the inside cannot be cleaned clear.
