A mask liner is a thin fabric layer that sits between the cushion and the face. It addresses the two problems that make most people give up on a full face mask in the first months, and they are the same problem seen from different ends. A liner changes how the mask seals
- Fit the liner and then reset the headgear tension. A liner adds a layer between cushion and face, so the setting that worked without one is usually too tight with it, and overtightening is what causes marks in the first place.
- Position the liner so no part of it covers the vent holes on the mask elbow. Vent holes must remain clear at all times, since a blocked vent allows exhaled carbon dioxide to be rebreathed.
- Check the seal on the first night at home rather than discovering a change while travelling.
- A liner is not a fix for a worn cushion. Where the silicone has hardened, clouded or lost its shape, the cushion needs renewing and a liner will not restore the seal.
- Do not use a liner that is torn, matted or has lost its shape, since an uneven layer creates a leak path rather than closing one.
What a liner actually does
Absorbs facial oils. Skin produces oil all night. On bare silicone that oil forms a film, the cushion begins to slide, and the mask leaks in the small hours after sealing perfectly at bedtime. Fabric absorbs it instead, which is why liners hold their seal later into the night than silicone alone.
Spreads the pressure. A silicone cushion concentrates load along a thin sealing edge. That edge is what leaves a red line across the bridge of the nose. A fleece layer distributes the same force over a wider area, so the mark is softer and fades faster.
Reduces noise from leak. Most mask whistle comes from air escaping across a slipping silicone edge. Closing that gap removes the noise at source rather than masking it.
Protects the skin. Anyone with sensitive skin, rosacea, eczema or a silicone sensitivity gets a fabric barrier rather than eight hours of direct silicone contact.
Warmth in a cold room. Silicone at room temperature feels cold against the face. Fleece does not, which makes putting the mask back on after a trip out of bed considerably easier to face.
