The faceplate is soft silicone and hollow, so it holds the mask against the face while carrying the therapy air, which is what moves the hose connection to the crown of the head and leaves the face clear. Because the air travels down both sides, compressing one side against a pillow simply redirects flow through the other, which is the design feature that makes the mask work for side and front sleepers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe consequence is that the faceplate is part of the air path rather than a chassis. A split, a crack or a perforation anywhere in it is a leak in the circuit, not a cosmetic defect, and it will show up as lost pressure and a mask that no longer seals. Silicone in nightly contact with skin oils also gradually loses its grip and its spring, and the usual response, tightening the headgear, presses the cushion harder into the face and tends to make leak and skin marking worse rather than better. Renewing the faceplate is the correct answer at that point and is considerably cheaper than a complete mask.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eTwo limits are worth stating. The faceplate fits the DreamWisp nasal mask only. It is not interchangeable with the Wisp, which is a different mask despite the similar name, and not with DreamWear, which uses its own sized frames.
